An event titled “Climate Change and Forests” was held by our Faculty within the scope of World Climate Day activities. The event was attended by our University’s Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Yafes YILDIZ, as well as academic staff members and students of our Faculty.

The opening speech of the event was delivered by the Dean of our Faculty, Prof. Dr. Handan UCUN ÖZEL. In her speech, Prof. Dr. UCUN ÖZEL stated, “Climate change is a global issue that has not only environmental but also economic, social, and societal dimensions. In this regard, we consider it important that this event contributes to strengthening environmental awareness among our students and all participants.”

As part of the program, Prof. Dr. Halil Barış ÖZEL, a faculty member of the Department of Forest Engineering at the Faculty of Forestry, delivered a presentation titled “Climate Change and Forests.” In his presentation, Prof. Dr. ÖZEL discussed the changes caused by climate change in forest ecosystems within the framework of scientific data and current approaches. He drew attention to the effects of global temperature rise, irregularities in precipitation patterns, drought, forest fires, the spread of harmful organisms, and disruptions in ecosystem balance on forests.

The presentation also emphasized that forests are not only natural areas affected by climate change, but also play a critical role in combating climate change. Prof. Dr. ÖZEL shared with the participants the importance of forests in terms of carbon sequestration capacity, improving air quality, regulating the water cycle, protecting biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance. It was stated that sustainable forest management, afforestation efforts, the protection of natural resources, and increasing environmental awareness in society are among the important steps in combating climate change.

The event was carried out as a productive program for students and participants, enabling them to evaluate the effects of climate change on forests more closely and to understand the importance of forests in environmental recovery processes.

At the end of the event, our University’s Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Yafes YILDIZ, presented a certificate of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Halil Barış ÖZEL for his contributions.
